#100 in a series of wild and precious things to help you stand on your head.

  1. TWIL (This Week I Learned)
This week I contemplated inversion. And how to move beyond inversion.
This week I found myself grieving a bit (actually quite a lot) because of a perception I had that I could no longer stand on my head.
I went through the steps to question the reality of my assumption, realized it had no foundation, and stood on my head :) Joy ensued.
Consider: What is your foundation?
2. Quote
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” ― Buckminster Fuller
“Without poetry, we lose our way.” —Joy Harjo, U.S. Poet Laureate & Academy of American Poets Chancellor (2019– )
“People don’t understand how you’re unmoved by their best efforts to shake you. The point they’re missing is they were never your foundation.” — Thema Bryant
3. Prompt
You need a strong core in order to invert. And inverting a problem is a simple way to literally see it differently.
Moving beyond inversion, on a walk in the woods this week, a friend and I stepped away from a problem and looked at it from many different angels, turning it around and around a bit like a kaleidoscope.
Physically, when our core foundation is strong, we can invert ourselves and turn ourselves in lots of different directions with precision.
Mentally I think it’s the same. When we’re rooted in a strong foundation, we can allow ourselves to see things from many different angels without feeling unmoored.
So — What is your foundation?
If helpful, consider what you are anchored in for your life?
Or, another way, what is your life’s philosophy?
4. Quest
With a strong core, a strong foundation, it’s easier to be wrong, to change your mind, to say you don’t know, to be okay with other people criticizing things you do, to admit you made a mistake, to sit in shame for a bit, to hand the shame back to its rightful owner, to grieve, to — well, maybe one or more of those things piqued your attention?
If you feel you have a strong foundation, move through the week being wrong, taking the other person’s point of view (just for fun!). Turn things you think you know on their head and consider their inversion.
